Bishop's Message on Gulf Coast Response

The following article excerpt is from a complete article on United Methodist News Service to be found at http:// tinyurl.com/43sj9q.

Flood buckets are stocked at Sager Brown, the United Methodist Committee on Relief depot in Baldwin, La.

Hurricane Ike's arrival was bad timing.Even though the Sept. 13 storm left behind miles of demolished homes, businesses and churches along the Texas Gulf Coast, the Wall Street debacle and presidential debates stole its thunder in the national spotlight.
Hurricane Ike damaged more than 200 United Methodist structures in the Texas Annual Conference, making it the biggest disaster the conference has faced to date.

"For communities recovering from Hurricane Rita just three years ago, Ike's blow threatens to overwhelm their sense of confidence in the future," said Bishop Janice Riggle Huie. "In addition, the economic uncertainty in our nation and world is eliciting anxiety in almost everyone."

Media attention quickly turned away, added the Rev. Tom Hazelwood, United Methodist Committee on Relief's domestic relief director. "Media coverage is important. It keeps the disaster in front of the public.

To aid in Hurricane Ike disaster relief in Texas and Louisiana, mail checks to CPCUMC, P O Box 2053, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. Be sure to include "Advance No. 3019695, Hurricanes 2008" on the memo line of your check.

Bishop Middleton has the following information regarding how we can support the Gulf Coast disaster response:

Computer Ministry Looking for Volunteers - An Individual or Small Group Opportunity

Earlier this summer Computer Ministry, Inc asked you for PCs. Well, Praise the LORD, we got them. Now, due to a large volume of PC donations from a major corporation, we need volunteers to help move the equipment from a local pick-up point to Mission Central, Mechanicsburg. We're also looking for folks willing to learn how to break down and refurbish PCs. This is NOT rocket science. If you can work a microwave, put a CD in a computer or a CD player, you can do this! And you'll meet a very special bunch of folks who already work here.

Contact us at computerministry@comcast.net  or call M-W-F 9:00 am - 3:00 pm to 717.766.6373, and ask for Charles.

Ministry Opportunities

  • Children's Ministry Opportunities - If you can rock a baby, tell a Bible story, or give hugs, we have the perfect ministry opportunity for you! Child care is provided for our infants through prekindergarten children during all of our Worship Services at all of our campuses. We need more persons willing to be part of a monthly rotation to care for the littlest members of our faith community. A commitment of 60 to 90 minutes a month has eternal significance in a child’s life. If you are willing to invest in the development of our children’s spiritual lives, please contact the following persons to serve: Colonial Park Campus: Katrina Fry at 540-7116.
  • Prism Setup Crew - Additional persons are needed to help set-up Sholter Hall for worship on Sunday mornings. Set-up usually happens on Saturday afternoons/evenings (99% of the time). Please contact Kathy Goodman at the church office if you can assist in this ministry.

Care Ministries

  • Prepared Meal Ministry – coordinated by Paula Grumbling, Karin Shipe, and Annette Strickler, this group provided meals to those who have recently returned from the hospital or have experienced the loss of a loved one. The “cooks” are contacted on a rotating basis as meals are needed.
  • Hospital Visitation Ministry – coordinated by Allen Thompson and Kathy Kimmel, these “ministers” visit those who are hospitalized. Each minister is scheduled for two days/month (preferably back to back) to visit patients in Harrisburg area hospitals. We go as far as Seidle Memorial in Mechanicsburg and Hershey Medical Center. While we go to bless others, we find ourselves being most blessed! Training is provided.
  • Nursing Home Visitation Ministry - These persons visit with those who are homebound or in assisted living housing each month. Training is provided (we are pleased to kick-off this ministry with the New Year).
  • Eucharistic Ministry - The Eucharistic Ministry delivers Holy Communion to the homebound the first Sunday or Monday of each month. We are each assigned to a homebound person, and go to them wherever they are—their home, the hospital, the nursing home. Supplies and training are provided.

This is certainly not an exhaustive list but it does include a few areas you may participate in caring for our faith community. If you are interested in serving in any of these areas, please contact Jennifer Hecker at the church office.

Student Ministry Opportunities @ Colonial Park

  • Students - Calling all students @ Colonial Park. Vessel could use more folks in the planning and doing of Vessel, whether in the media booth, on the stage, or in the background! If you sing or play any instrument, contact Tyler Margeson to see how you can get involved with the Band. If you prefer to be in the back, contact Pastor Adam on how to get involved! You can do it!
  • Adults - We could always use more adult volunteers for events as a one time shot or as part of a regular commitment in our various small groups on Wednesdays or breakout groups on Sundays during Vessel. Don’t worry, training is provided and we won’t send you out without giving you the tools you’ll need! The students will embrace you!

For more information on anything regarding the student ministries at CrossPoint Church, contact Pastor Adam (aestep@xpointmuc.org) or Ben Pulaski at the South Hanover Campus (benpulaski@verizon.net).
